Crowdfunding for Fashion Seminar

Crowdfunding is a hot topic among fashion designers/entrepreneurs and with good reason – with creative businesses finding it so hard to access loans and investment, any alternative options to raising finance must be taken seriously.

There is a growing number of fashion businesses that have had successful campaigns, however, overall fashion campaigns have the lowest success rate. In fact, just 29% of the fashion/clothing projects listed on Kickstarter to date have been successfully funded.
With the growing number of platforms and models, it’s essential to understand the differences between the options on offer to see which may be right for you.

As with all aspects of running a business, planning is the key to a successful campaign crowdfunding.

During this session we will be covering the following:-

  • An overview of crowdfunding
  • The major differences between equity and reward based platforms
  • A snapshot of some of the most popular platforms (and a few you may not know about)
  • How to plan a crowdfunding campaign that people care about and actually fund
  • The costs involved in running a campaign
  • Case studies of successful fashion campaigns
  • How to promote your campaign
  • Tips on what it takes to succeed

By the end of the session you will have a better understanding of crowdfunding and if it’s right for your business, what it takes to succeed and have an action plan to help you launch your own campaign.

Space for Fashion Thinking and Review

As we move into our fifth year the Fashion Research Network (FRN) invite you to Review, Reflect and Revise. FRN began as a collaborative project with the aim of promoting and sharing the work of PhD and early career fashion and dress researchers; bridging the gaps and exploring the intersections between contemporary, practice based research, historical and theoretical approaches to dress.

From our beginnings as a small group organising a pair of events at the Royal College of Art and Courtauld Institute of Art, the Fashion Research Network has grown and developed through nearly 40 events to become a leading organisation in fashion research. FRN is a space for dialogue, exchange and experimentation about fashion and dress thinking and practice. This symposium draws on our interdisciplinary approach and brings together the themes of our discussions from the last five years to highlight future areas of collaboration, practice and dialogue.

The first in a series of events marking 5 years of the FRN, Space for Fashion Thinking & Practice: Review, Reflect, Revise symposium and exhibition considers the current state of interdisciplinary fashion thinking and practice.

Dressing Black Masculinities

Historically, black men of African descent have resisted stereotypes and tropes through their dressed appearance. Adopting, adapting and appropriating styles from the cultures surrounding them, this group have exerted an undeniable influence on both subcultural style and mainsteam fashion - although this contribution is often overlooked in traditional accounts of mens’ history.

In the 20th and 21st centuries black men have articulated their sartorial masculinities in myriad ways; sometimes blending in, sometimes standing out but always expressing multiple identities to reflect issues of culture, diaspora, fashion and appearance. Our three notable speakers will draw on and explore contemporary and historic aspects from their own research and experience.

But.... with a little help and carefully planned strategy, you can do it alone and without breaking the bank or getting into debt.

This master class will show you how to do your own marketing on a budget.
